MEXICO: New Atenco revolt gives Marcos a cause

Once again the town of San Salvador Atenco, in the state of Mexico, has been the scene of a revolt against government authority. This time, two days of violent confrontation with municipal, state and federal police left a toll of one dead (a youth), about 50 injured (mostly police) and close to 200 arrested. The episode may have injected some life into the flagging 'alternative' campaign being conducted by Subcomandante Marcos, leader of the Zapatistas, who has set up camp in Atenco and assumed the defence of the detainees.
